| MombasaWhere?
Mombasa is an island on the Indian Ocean and is the Second City of Kenya. How? If you are not cruising to Mombasa, you can fly either on scheduled flights or chartered planes. Travelling there by train or by bus is also very interesting. Who? Whoever said " Don't wait for people to be kind. Show them how," must have lived in Mombasa and experienced the heartfelt hospitality of its residents. Mombasa is home to a unique blend of people from different tribes and cultures, with great Arabic influence. Living there is like living in 'The Arabian Nights.' Really? One of the best attractions in Mombasa is The Fort Jesus Museum, situated on a coral ridge overlooking Mombasa's old habour. It was built in 1593-1596 by the Portuguese to protect their trade route to India and their interests in East Africa.Later on from 1696-1698, Omani Arabs attacked the fort until they conqured Fort Jesus and the entire Coast of Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Pemba. The Portuguese were to take back the Fort in 1728 and to surrender again to the residents of Mombasa on 26th November 1729. When Kenya became part of the British protectorate on 1st July 1895, the fort was conerted into a prison. Later in 1958, the Fort was declared a National Park. Excavation was carried out and Fort Jesus became a museum in 1962. It is open daily from 0930hrs - 1800hrs. When? Most people love to visit Mombasa during the festive season and this extends from December - February. If you would like to snorkel, the best time is from January - March. The low season is from May - June, and that is when you can get the best deals sometimes as low as half the price during the peak season. August-September is also a lovely time to travel since it is less humid in Mombasa during that period. Current News? Set to be Mombasa’s largest housing project, Hacienda Eco City is a trendsetter for modern-day developments. The developers have employed green technology in the construction of the new housing estate, making it a model for sustainable community development. Hacienda is a Spanish word meaning big homestead. The environmentally friendly project comes complete with wetlands for biological treatment of water and will generate its own power from solar energy. With flat rooftop
houses adopted from Moroccan architecture, the eco city is an ingenious addition
to Africa’s green architecture.The
